The science behind strong teeth and healthy gums

The science behind strong teeth and healthy gums

Probiotics are increasingly being noted for their role in keeping the mouth’s natural environment in healthy, normal balance. Along with nutrient-rich foods and good daily habits, they can be part of a simple routine for holistic oral hygiene.

In part two of our interview series, Jakob, PhD Medical Sciences and BioGaia’s research expert in oral health expalins how probiotics work, and the lifestyle choices that can make all the difference to maintaining a healthy smile.

What scientific evidence supports the use of probiotics for oral health maintenance?

“Probiotics are increasingly recognised as a complementary treatment for maintaining balanced, oral health conditions, supported by a growing body of scientific evidence,” comments Jakob.

What lifestyle factors can help keep teeth and gums healthy and strong?

While we know that sugary foods can cause cavities, Jakob highlights that your diet can also influence the health of your gums.

“New research indicates that what you eat can impact the mouth’s ecosystem,” Jakob explains. It suggest that adding more fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential nutrients to your meals may help maintain and keep good oral health.

By combining daily oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing, complementing with probiotics and ensuring a nutrient-rich, whole foods diet, you can take a proactive approach to your oral health.

Your journey to healthier teeth and gums starts with simple adjustments—and the results can last a lifetime.
